Saffron Craig

Textile artist

Hello, I am Saffron. I grew up in the small town of Mogo on the New South Wales south coast. Growing up surrounded by trees and nature, as well as creative people, inspired my love of textiles. I’ve always enjoyed learning and at age nine I taught myself to crochet and then to knit. As a teenager I was making and designing clothing and went on to start my own fashion label. Now, my focus is creating Textiles Art. My passion for textiles shaped my career. I studied Fashion Design specialising in Textiles and graduated with first-class honours from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. I later graduated from Southern Cross University with a Bachelor of Education degree specialising in Textiles and Design. I love to explore the bushland of the Sydney Harbour National Park, close to my home. Here I can immerse myself in the natural environment and gain endless inspiration for my work. I study the textures and shapes of the native plants, particularly the banksias. Back in my home studio I paint and stitch these forms to create my abstract textile landscapes, layering colour and adding texture. My art practice is the daily meditation that helps me escape the stresses of everyday life. I’m looking forward to sharing with you my passion for textiles, and the techniques I use to capture nature in my abstract paintings.

What others say . . . .

“The techniques Saffron shares pushed my textile art practice. Thanks, Saffron.”
